Sanetti Plateau and Harenna Forest: Goba to Dolo Mena

Added on 14 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The road south from Goba climbs about 1,300 m onto the Sanetti Plateau, passing over 4,000 m beside tarns and giant lobelias, often cited as Africa's highest all-weather road. It then drops off the Harenna Escarpment through heather and cloud forest to the lowland town of Dolo Mena, with chances of Ethiopian wolf on the plateau and giant forest hog and monkeys in the forest.

General Instructions

About 105 km one way; allow a full day with wildlife stops. A 4x4 is needed and the road can be hard going in the rains; November to February is the best season. Fly to Robe (Goba) rather than drive from Addis: the US advisory exempts only Bale Mountains National Park from its Oromia warning, so avoid travelling beyond the park.
