Rwenzori Central Circuit

A demanding loop into the Mountains of the Moon. From Nyakalengija it climbs through montane forest to Nyabitaba, then through the bogs and giant heather of the Bujuku Valley beneath Mount Stanley, Speke and Baker. It crosses Scott Elliot Pass (4,372 m) to the Kitandara Lakes and returns over Freshfield Pass. This is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of glaciers, giant lobelias and moss-draped forest.

General Instructions

Plan 7–9 days. This is one of the wettest mountain ranges on Earth, so expect knee-deep bog: wear gumboots, keep a fully waterproof pack liner and carry warm dry layers for the huts. The driest windows are late December–February and June–August. Ladders and boardwalks on the passes are slippery when wet.
