Altai Tavan Bogd Expedition

Logged by @trailx

Western Mongolia's great mountain approach: about 180 km from Ölgii through Sagsai and Tsengel, up the Khovd river valley and into Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, to the base camp below the Potanin Glacier (about 14 km long, Mongolia's longest) and Khüiten Peak (4,356 m), the country's highest point. Expect gravel, riverbed tracks, sand and three to five river crossings, with Kazakh communities and petroglyphs along the way.

General Instructions

Best mid-June to mid-September, ideally July to early August. Snowmelt in late June and early July can make river crossings in the Khovd valley hip-deep and fast: walk them first, cross early in the day and never alone. Carry fuel, recovery gear and a satellite communicator.
