Adi Kailash Road

Added on 10 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The border road up the Kali river gorge from Dharchula (about 915 m) to Gunji (about 3,200 m) and on to Jolingkong, the base for Adi Kailash, at about 4,400 m. It is home to the viral S-bend between Lamari and Budhi, a stack of back-to-back hairpins on a loose debris slope, and the switchback ladder that climbs from Budhi to the Chiyalekh meadows. The Border Roads Organisation is upgrading the Tawaghat–Gunji–Lipulekh axis under Project Hirak, but landslide zones at Malghat, the S-bend, Gasku, Kulagad and Elagad still close the road several times a season.

Trail Profile

General Instructions

Season is roughly May to mid-October, with permits often suspended in July and August for the monsoon. Check the road status the day before: landslides at Malghat, the S-bend and Gasku can close it for hours or days, and the Kulagad Bailey bridge was washed away in September 2026. Drive in daylight, keep left for oncoming vehicles on narrow stretches, never stop on a blind bend, and carry fuel from Dharchula.
