About trails in Utah

Utah's routes here sit on either side of a sharp line: the irrigated Wasatch Front and the dry basins beyond it. In Utah Valley, the Provo River Parkway Ride follows the river from the canyon mouth toward Utah Lake, and the Lindon Heritage and Murdock Canal Trails trace a paved former canal along the bench below Mount Timpanogos. Above Bountiful, the Mahogany Ridge Trail, Bountiful climbs to nearly 2,000 m for views over the Great Salt Lake.

West of the mountains, the Mosida and Rush Valley Off-Road Route crosses about 190 km of open Great Basin desert. Far to the south, the Fort Pierce Wash Off-Road Loop explores sandy washes and red rock in Warner Valley near St. George, an area known for its dinosaur tracksite.

Best time to go
Spring and fall are best. Southern Utah deserts are dangerously hot in July and August, while Wasatch foothill trails can hold snow and mud from November into April.
Terrain
Every route here rates moderate, ranging from about 1,000 m in the southern desert to nearly 2,000 m on the Wasatch foothills. Expect paved paths, steep dirt trail and sandy, rocky desert tracks.
Permits & access
The desert off-road routes cross remote public land with no services, so carry extra water and fuel and use a high-clearance vehicle. Sandy washes can become impassable after storms.
