About trails in Florida

Florida never rises far above sea level, and its routes make the most of water and wetlands instead of climbs. The Florida Keys Scenic Highway Corridor follows the Overseas Highway for 263 km across bridges and low coral islands, while the Cross Everglades Drive runs 179 km over the sawgrass prairie between the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Cyclists can try the Gainesville SW 8th Avenue Loop, a 59 km ride through the rolling edge of north-central Florida, or shorter park circuits in Palm Beach County. On foot, Markham Park Trail in Broward County and lakeside walks in Largo offer easy, shaded outings, and the Panhandle contributes quiet forest roads in Walton County. A 670 km road trip from Niceville on the Emerald Coast to Orlando rounds out the state's longer drives.

Best time to go
November through April brings dry, mild weather; summer is hot and humid with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms, and hurricane season runs from June to November.
Terrain
Every route is easy or moderate on paved roads, boardwalks and sandy park trails, with the highest point only about 55 m above sea level.
Permits & access
Several drives use toll roads around Orlando and South Florida, so a SunPass or toll-by-plate billing is useful; bring insect repellent and sun protection for wetland trails.
