About trails in Michigan

Michigan's Lower Peninsula is gentle country, and most of its routes here are made for bikes. The Barry-Roubaix Gravel Course near Hastings follows the dirt roads used by one of the largest gravel races in the United States, rolling through farmland and lakes for 58 km. In Detroit, the Detroit RiverWalk and Wilson Trail Ride follows the waterfront along the Detroit River, with views across to Windsor, Ontario.

Northwest of the city, the Proud Lake Loop 4 MTB Ride is a short, easy singletrack loop in a state recreation area along the Huron River. Longer days are possible on the 127 km Mount Pleasant to East Lansing Ride through central Michigan farm towns. For drivers, the US-131 corridor links Grand Rapids with the southwest of the state.

Best time to go: May through October is the riding season; September and early October add fall color. Winter brings snow and lake-effect storms, and spring thaw can leave gravel roads soft.
Terrain: The land is flat to rolling, with nothing above about 350 m. Routes are easy to moderate; the challenge comes from distance, loose gravel and wind rather than climbing.
Permits & access: Vehicles entering Michigan state parks and recreation areas such as Proud Lake need a Recreation Passport. City paths and county gravel roads are open to all.
