About trails in Maryland

Maryland packs a lot of riding into the Piedmont belt between Baltimore and Washington. The Patapsco Valley Bloede Dam MTB Ride works the steep, wooded slopes of Patapsco Valley State Park along the river, and the Schaeffer Farm MTB Trails in Seneca Creek State Park are a well-known network of flowing singletrack through fields and woods. The Tour Dem Parks Baltimore Loop links the city's historic parks on a 58 km road ride.

Farther east the land flattens toward Chesapeake Bay. The Algonquin Trail, Pocomoke State Forest runs 21 km through loblolly pine and cypress swamp near the Pocomoke River, barely rising above sea level. Drives here are mostly suburban connectors through Frederick and Montgomery counties, useful for linking rides rather than sightseeing.

Best time to go: April to early June and September to November give the best trail conditions. Summers are hot and humid, and the Eastern Shore brings biting insects in warm months.
Terrain: Low and moderate throughout, with the highest point on these routes under 170 m. Short, punchy climbs on rocky, rooty singletrack give the mountain bike trails their difficulty.
Permits & access: Some areas of Patapsco Valley State Park charge a day-use service fee. Local mountain bike trails are often closed after heavy rain to prevent damage, so check trail status before driving out.
