About trails in Indiana

Southern Indiana's unglaciated hills give the state its most challenging riding. The Lake Monroe Hills Ride covers 58 km of steep, rolling roads around the state's largest lake, bordered by stretches of Hoosier National Forest south of Bloomington. In town, the Sewell Connector Trail, Bloomington provides an easy walking link through the city's greenway network.

Farther north the land flattens into farmland and lake country. The Winona Lake Heritage Trail Ride loops 16 km around a historic resort lake in Kosciusko County, and the Lincoln Highway US 30 Indiana Drive follows America's first transcontinental road through St. Joseph County. In the west, the Terre Haute Vigo County Drive tours the Wabash River valley close to the Illinois line.

Best time to go: May, June, September and October offer mild temperatures and fall color in the southern hills; summers are humid and winters can bring snow and ice on rural roads.
Terrain: Most routes are easy on paved roads and trails below 300 m, but the Lake Monroe loop packs in repeated short, steep climbs.
Permits & access: Lake Monroe's state recreation areas may charge a vehicle entry fee in season; otherwise routes follow public roads and city trails with no permits needed.
