Petra Monastery Trail (Ad Deir)

Added on 16 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The main walk through Petra, the rock-cut city of the Nabataeans. From the visitor centre in Wadi Musa, the route follows the Siq, a narrow sandstone canyon, to Al-Khazneh (the Treasury), continues past the Street of Facades and the Colonnaded Street to Qasr al-Bint, then climbs about 800 rock-cut steps to Ad Deir, the Monastery. Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trail Profile

General Instructions

About 11 km return with roughly 400 m of climbing, most of it on the Monastery steps. Allow a full day. There is little shade beyond the Siq: carry water and sun protection, and start at opening time in summer. Donkeys are offered on the steps, but walking is kinder to them and to you.
