Lima to Pucallpa via Cerro de Pasco and Tingo María

Added on 4 Nov 2026
Logged by @fakir27

From the Pacific coast over the Andes on the Carretera Central, across the Ticlio pass at about 4,800 m to La Oroya, north over the mining town of Cerro de Pasco at about 4,300 m, then down through Huánuco and the cloud forest at Tingo María to the Amazon river port of Pucallpa. Guevara and Granado left Lima on 17 May 1952 and reached Pucallpa by truck a week later, where they boarded the riverboat La Cenepa for Iquitos.

Trail Profile

General Instructions

About 776 km one way; allow two days. The road climbs from the coast to over 4,800 m in a few hours, so altitude sickness is likely; then it drops to the hot, humid Amazon basin. Heavy truck traffic on the Carretera Central, and landslides in the rainy season. Travel by day.
