Laguna de los Tres Hike from El Chaltén

Added on 16 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

Patagonia's classic day hike to the foot of Monte Fitz Roy. From the north end of El Chaltén the trail climbs through lenga forest to Laguna Capri, crosses the Río Blanco valley to Campamento Poincenot and finishes with a steep, stony climb to Laguna de los Tres, a glacial lake right under the granite towers of Fitz Roy. It is inside Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trail Profile

General Instructions

About 23 km return with roughly 950 m of climbing. The first 9 km are moderate; the last kilometre gains about 400 m on loose rock and is the crux. Allow 8 to 10 hours. Patagonian wind can be ferocious near the lake, so carry a windproof layer and turn back if gusts make the final climb unsafe. November to March is the main season.

Best time to go

Oct–Apr

October to April is the best time for Patagonia and the Andes, with mild weather and long days. Winter, from June to August, brings snow to the mountains, but it is a good time for riding around Córdoba and Buenos Aires.
