The most famous day hike in the Cordillera Blanca: from the meadows of Cebollapampa in the Llanganuco valley up past waterfalls and a high plateau to Laguna 69, a turquoise lake at about 4,600 m under the glaciers of Chacraraju. The trail lies inside Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects the highest tropical mountain range on Earth.

General Instructions

About 13.6 km return with roughly 700 m of climbing, from 3,900 m to 4,600 m. The altitude is the hard part: spend two or three days in Huaraz (3,050 m) first. Allow 5 to 6 hours. Start early, as afternoon cloud and storms are common, and carry sun protection, warm layers and water. May to September is the dry season.
