Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (Classic Route from Km 82)
The classic four-day Inca Trail, from the Km 82 checkpoint at Piscacucho in the Sacred Valley to the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu. The stone path climbs past Patallacta and Wayllabamba to Dead Woman's Pass at about 4,215 m, the high point, then crosses the Runkurakay pass and drops through cloud forest past the Inca sites of Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna. It is part of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and of the Qhapaq Ñan Andean road system.

General Instructions
About 35 km over four days on stone steps and paths, with roughly 2,300 m of climbing. Day two, over Dead Woman's Pass, is the hardest. Acclimatise in Cusco or the Sacred Valley for at least two days. Porters carry camp gear on organised treks, but carry your own water, rain gear and warm layers: nights below 3,600 m are cold and the cloud forest is wet. May to September is the dry season.
